Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag follows the pirate Edward Kenway, grandfather of Ratonhnhakéton from Assassin’s Creed III, as he establishes the pirate republic of the Nassau and seeks to become the most feared pirate in the Caribbean. Black Flag features similar gameplay to previous games in the series, with a mix of open-world exploration, stealth assassinations, and naval combat.
The game was well-received by critics, with praise particularly directed at its open-world design, storytelling, Pirates of the Caribbean-like atmosphere, and improved naval combat and exploration. However, the game’s online multiplayer mode was less well-received.
BioShock Infinite
Set in the fictional floating city of Columbia, in 1912, the game’s protagonist, former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt, is sent to rescue a young woman, Elizabeth, who has been imprisoned there since childhood.
Elizabeth has the power to manipulate “tears” in the fabric of reality, often bringing objects from other dimensions into the game world. This allows Booker to arm himself with weapons from other times and universes and opens up new possibilities for combat and exploration. The game’s boardwalk-style multiplayer mode, Infinity, is also set in Columbia.
BioShock Infinite received positive reviews from critics, who praised its story, characters, and gameplay, but others also found it overlong and excessively violent. It won over 85 pre-release awards for its previews and demos.
Borderlands 2
Borderlands 2 follows a new group of vault hunters who travel to the planet Pandora to find the fabled “Vault”, said to contain ancient and powerful alien technology. The game features four new playable characters, all of whom have their own skill trees. The game also features a “vehicle combat” system in which players can use vehicles to explore the world and combat enemies.
Borderlands 2 was well-received by critics, with an average score of 87/100 on Metacritic. The game was praised for its visuals, story, voice acting, and gameplay. However, the game was also criticized for its lack of innovation.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Skyrim’s main story revolves around defeating Alduin. The latter is a dragon who is said to be the one to destroy the world. The plot takes place two hundred years after the events of Oblivion in the fictional province of Skyrim.
Skyrim was a commercial success, with over seven million copies sold. The game received praise lavished on its detailed world and RPG elements. Although reviewers were disappointed with the game’s combat and quest design, they nonetheless considered it to be one of the best games of the year. Many awards were given to Skyrim, including Game of the Year from more than 30 publications.
